Ok- I made a totally cool discovery tonight. I used my Inkabilities with my son's spin art machine. We went to Wal-Mart and they got a spin art machine. It came with neon inks and black glossy paper. So, as soon as I saw the black glossy paper, I thought about my Inkabilities. I cut up some white glossy paper and went to work. I had the best time dropping the inks over the spinning paper. I tried a whole bunch of ink colors. They all looked great. So, you should all get a spin art machine. They are inexpensive and a bunch of fun. I will upload some samples of the papers soon.

This does sound cool. I can't wait to see the samples, too. Isn't true that there are so many products/toys for children that WE need/want! :D

Spin art is exactly what I thought KV's son's rainbow sponge background looked like in the gallery. When I posted my response to his gallery piece I wrote that it looked like spin art to me!! Gee, I was afraid no one would know what I meant. :D I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembered those machines.:)

I couldn't just upload the background without any stamping over it. So, I chose a very sparse spin-art background and put some cut out stars over it. This was a bunch of fun to make. My sons made a bunch more tonight. They just love the way they look with the Inkabilities. They already set aside the inks that came with the machine.

Jil...

How cool is that!!! I love the way that turned out... I remember playing with my spin art as a kid, guess I will have to get me one to play with as an adult... I do like how that turned out and your choice of embelleshiment made it really cool.... I know that you were having a great time with the spin machine... Thanks for sharing your new toy with us!!! Have fun...

WOW!

This looks like fireworks on the Fourth of July! The stars seem to explode out of the background.

Isn't it great to find new uses for old (nd new) toys? Your kids will be lucky to have a turn on their spin art machine! LOL

Jil,

Love it! I can see endless possibilities with this toy, too. Great job of accenting with those stars. Thanks for sharing this idea with us.

I have long been eyeing the spin art thingie at toys r us, wondering how it would work w/reinkers!

you have confirmed my suspicions!!

I have also eyed those spirograph thingies, but since that is more for use w/pens etc I'm not quite sure how i could work the reinker in to that (my husband says, the spirograph nowadays doesn't have near as many types of "gears" thingies, for making a large variety of patterns, as it used to when we were growing up; I never had one so i don't know about it!)

that spin art thingie just looks neat. Now i'm imagining the metallics (not that i have any yet) w/some other stuff brayered over as a sort of resist, or semi-resist. OR splattering over some type of say the resist paper, or a stamped resist design. OR hmm poshabilities! lots of em. As a sci fi nut and a big FAN of resist techniques i can't help saying, Resistance is Futile. (but bee-yoo-ti-ful!). Oops off on a tangent. anyway you are inspiring me w/ideas and ideas and ideas.

This is a really neat card and another good example of looking outside the box. It is just endless the possibilites of using this. I love the bright colors and it looks easy to do with great effects.

I found the spin art machine in the crafts section. There is an entire row of kids craft supplies. It was there. Good Luck finding it.

Hi All,
Just received my April/May Rubberstamper mag and on page 50 is an example of spin art. Thought those of you interested in spin art would like to see it. I've used spin art in my pre-school class but never put it to use as a background but you can be sure I will now. Gotta go stamp.;)

Boy am I dissapointed! Of all the things my kids had growing
up and that I kept, the spin-art machine was not one of them.
Oh well, will have to get me one of them. I love the look they
give as a background. Your card would be a good one to send
to one of the military. I think it would sure cheer the person
up who received it. :) :)

Patti,
Thanks for pointing out the spin art in the rubberstamper mag. I got mine friday and haven't had a chance to look at it yet. It goes to show that I'm not the only one who uses everything and anything for stamping! LOL! I'm looking forward to seeing what can really be done with a spin art background. Once I'm stamping again, I plan to do up a few cards with the spin art papers we've created.

i am disappointed with my effort. i am probably the only one who can make a mess with red and blue ink. did you know it it is a ugly black if it mixes while its spinning. i will try it again with some new glossy cardstock.

I wonder if it would work better if you tried one color at a time. I bought the machine last fri. but the only size battery in the house was the size I needed for the machine. Good luck. Try try again.

Do keep trying. What brand did you buy Linda? We got one that was made by RoseArt and it didn't work very well. I returned it. We then got one called Paint and Swirl (something like that) and it is the one carried by Michaels (why didn't I think to look there first? duh!). We purchased ours at the local hobby store (and paid $2 more!! boo hoo......I could have used a coupon!!) and it works WAY better then the other one did.

the one i had is made from nasta. it is only about 14 years old my daughter (who is 21) got it for her birthday years ago. i did use one color at a time but it didn't do well. it was the old paper that had been in the set. i am going to use new paper and try it later today. if it still doesn't work i will see about getting a new one.

Ooooh! This is cool. I have a spin art that I got years ago because I had remembered how much fun it used to be when I was younger to do spin art at Cedar Point Amusement Park. Now I have something fun to do with it.

I just made a trip out to my garage/craftroom to see what it is I bought a while back at a garage sale that I thought might be fun. I paid probably $3. for a box with a pottery wheel in it. I think I bought it thinking I could use it somehow with paper and paint. I'd better keep it handy and play with it when I can use my hand better; strained my wrist.

I love garage sales; you get some great items for really reasonable prices. Two weeks ago my DH only got out of the car because it was such a small sale. He came back to the car and handed me a brand new Heat tool still in the box, he paid $1.00. I couldn't believe it, he's paying more attention than I thought!

WOW! Diana, that's an awesome deal! I wish I could find stuff like that at a sale. I've got to start going to more garage sales. They're kinda fun. Like a treasure hunt. JIL
I forgot about this thread. We had so much fun with the spin art. I think you could make a pottery wheel work the same way. Let us know what comes of it.

A pottery wheel sounds like fun. Diana, you DH sounds like mine. He likes going to sales and flea markets. Over the years he has bought me some really nice stuff. The last thing he purchased was a professional air brush kit complete with air compressor. I made some very nice backgrounds using re-inkers and Spellbinder Impressabilities.

Speaking or "air", I saw in Costco where they sell six cans of compressed air.I almost bought them but thought it would take me awhile to use them up.I changed my mind am going to get them the next time I go there.I can also use them to clean my computer keys! I read somewhere where you can spray the air onto the drops of Alcohol Inks and Dee's Irresistable Inks and they make great patterns!

Julie,
Tim Holtz has a video doing just that. He puts down a drop of alcohol ink onto glossy cardstock & sprays on it with compressed air to move it around. I always wondered if it would also work with Dee's Rainbow inks. It looks like a cool technique. JIL
