Hey Y’all!!! Well as promised we are going to try something new and creative!!!!
This will be the FIRST in a series of Card Layout Design Challenges!!
Now, don’t panic!! Lol… the layout design will be given and you come up with the card!
Of course as with everything there must be rules to follow, awww don’t groan you know it must be so! Lol They are not so bad!
First, you MUST follow the layout design as given. This means you must place the elements on the card as in the design. If it shows a punched corner you MUST use a punched corner. If it shows a circle embellishment you MUST use a circle embellishment in that area.
Secondly, at least ONE stamp MUST be used on the card- no paper-only cards (We mean no STICKER CARDS.
Thirdly, members do NOT post designs to the thread- only post your CARD for the design given. If you have an idea for a sketch you may send it to one of the moderators for consideration. Please remember for those of us who are beginners please keep the designs fairly simple and easy to follow.
I think that about covers it!!! Now that wasn’t so bad, huh?
So, ok, y’all ready to get started???
The following is my design.
Its called “Spring Flowers”… You must use a flower as your focal! It can be stamped or cut out or whatever you want, but remember there must also be a STAMP used on the card… You must use at least one corner punch somewhere on your card. The rest is up to you!!! Have fun!!!!!
Here is my design and my card made from the design will be in the following post.
NOW GET BUSY!! We wanna see cards!!!!!

Ok !! Here is my card made from the card design!! I used scanned material for my bg paper. My flower is a cuttle bug piece. I used two circle punches and my greeting is from SU. I used a decorative corner punch on the corners and then flipped it forward and glued it down with a glue dot...
So thats mine!! hope you like it..... We want to see lots of cards!!!
God bless

I'm bad with Initials please explain just for the first design. My brain does not function when I am confused which is most of the time these days. I know what some are but not all. Thanks Nyoka your card is gorgeous and I think I would love to follow along....Blossom
PS I sure can expand my crafting horizons this is gonna be fun
I think pp must be patterned paper; bg is background.
Question: should we use a Posh image?

Sorry, Blossom, the "PP" stands for "patterned paper",,, "BG" stands for 'background'... the pp is the decorative paper you use for the background of your cards.
And AMY... you may use Posh to your hearts content!! or whatever you want, there just has to be at least ONE stamped image...
If I can be of more help, please let me know. We want to see lots of cards!!

Daniel, my friend, I can't believe you will let lack of manufactured 'tools' stop you from entering this challenge! Use your scissors to make a decorative corner... use a circle template to cut out your circles... and use anything available for the background paper and focal! Easy as pie!!
C'mon... you can do it!!!
Hope you enter..

Trudy, thats the easy part!!!! You just follow the design I showed.. One circle is placed on the other and then placed on your patterend paper which has been attached to the card base... then add your greeting. REMEMBER there must be one stamped thing on the card... as you can see on mine it was my greeting...
Hope this helps...

Nyoka, your card is so pretty - very feminine looking. Thanks for coming up with this fun challenge. If we're going to do this on a regular basis, I have a question. I added a brad to my card shown below. Is it okay to add little embellishments like that to the basic design?
Anyway, here's my card.

Daylene, the circles were made with the Spellbinders circle Nestabilities, and I used my Wizard to cut them. I also have the rectangle Nestabilities, and love them both. You get 5 or 6 different sizes in each set. There are other shapes and sizes available, and they can all be embossed, too. There's never an end to all the "toys" we can buy!

This is such a cool challenge.... I was having trouble sleeping.. so, I thought i can do this challenge... I did not print out the sketch.. I told myself that I can remember how it is to be layed out... Well, I goofed.. I did not put my circles right, or my greeting.. so I am still going to share, I hope that is ok.. if not moderators, please delete my post... blame it on lack of sleep and stress.. lol
Back ground paper is from Michael's there is no company name on the back.. The gerber daisy stamp is from The Angel Company, the stamped friends is one of those hand held letter stampers.. flower brads i forget which company.

Two more great cards! Linda, your colors look great; I love the reddish color circle. ;)

I think the slight interpretation of the template is what makes each card unique and fun! As long as you use the same elements in the template - you go!
Beautiful!

all the cards are great and there is no wright or wrong. we just need to use all the elements she has on her sketch.
i did find a square card i had made. it was too large so i decided to cut it down, well' guess i was not paying attention or my brain was sleeping because i ended up with two pieces of paper, i cut the folded edge off, bet i will not make that mistake again. i will keep trying till i get it right.
this will help me use up the imiages that i have already stamped. some are cut out and others are waiting to be. i am glad daniel started the thread because i am sorting thru my stuff and using it.

As 'sketch challenges' go, this was a 'toughie' for me. I'm used to a bit more latitude in 'translating' the sketch--and most of you know that 'card' stamping ain't my first love...LOL
That said, I did my durndest to abide by the 'rules-of-submission' &... employ the 'Nyoka spirit' of using what you have to make stuff.
More than happy to share the 'what I used', I'm so spent by gettin' it done that it will have to wait for a bit.
Was doing it 'fun'? Nope. Was it a 'challenge'? Yep. Am I glad I did it? You betcha!

Linda, I love the colors on your card, even if you think the red didn't come through. I ended up taking a digital picture of my card because the scanner screwed up the background paper.
Sue, I love how you did the flower on your card - have to remember that technique!
Daniel, your card is really neat and has a kind of "other-worldly" feel to it. The corner punch you used is nice - don't think I've seen that one - and a very nice quote.
Char and Sue, it's just patterned paper for my background that I picked up on sale when Recollections went out of business!

Daniel, you can say it all you want, but you are a cardmaker!! LOL! (Maybe not as often as some of us, but you make some nice cards.) :D
This is a really cool one! I love how all of the elements go together; the butterflies, the sentiment and the sun/earth. AND I don't know if it is intentional, but the corner punches look like a butterfly wing. I think maybe you used one of those single oval punches and made individual punches for them? Even if you didn't intend it to resemble a wing design ... it's still cool! :D
Daniel
03-15-2008, 07:25 AM
First off. I love all the examples I've seen. Each one has some aspect that gets my attention. Now about how my card got done... [warning: this may take a bit] ;)
I knew I couldn't 'think' too much about this or I wouldn't get one made--sound familiar? Anyhoo. I pulled a piece of really old PP [sponge-look in blue & white] that was lying around & cut a rectangle. Used a can to draw the large circle on a big label--stamped its sticky side with an older Posh stamp [hibiscus?] using a blue Posh marker. Sprinkled a bit of yellow EP on & hit it with the heat gun. Oops! The EP worked, but the entire circle turned black so I lost the image. Back to the drawing board. Stamped the same stamp on another label [paper side] using green marker; smeared it with vaseline to vellumize & used a circle guide to choose the part I wanted. Cut that out & tried it on the large circle. Hmmm Looked a bit like the earth over the moon. And when I glued the circle set on the PP, I had the sky. "Not bad", thought I. Now for a sentiment. Used one from a butterfly set [Inque] & stamped it on a label in blue marker. Edged it with marker to create shadows. Hit it with heat & promptly lost all the sentiment! Glued it in place anyway [waste not; want not]. Took plain paper, stamped in green, tore into a rectangle, vellumized & glued over the first sentiment. So far? Not bad. But time to tackle the corners. Used an older corner stamp with blue marker, then 2 handgrip punches [oval & teardrop]. Not great, but not bad. Time to finish. Pulled a butterfly stamp from the set. Used blue marker & stamped the PP. Result? I didn't 'hate' it & all the accidents ended up creating a piece that looks like it was deliberate--even the 'butterfly wing' punching.
Are there things I would change [redo]? Sure. But nothing major. Moral? When in doubt, don't be too quick to throw it out--just keep going.
Greetings!
Wow! These are wonderful challenge cards!
Daniel, that is the most serendipitous set of circumstances! Your card is an ingenious use of mistakes that make a fantastic piece of art! :)

Here is my card. It's really not crooked, just was crooked on the scanner. I used corner punch from EK Success, PP with circles on it from my scrap pile, added pink circle, white circle, punched daisy, and tag with "Hugs" stamped on it. This was so much fun--can hardly wait for the next challenge.

This is what works for me. I cut the layer 1/4" smaller on every side than the card itself. Sometimes I have left the layer just about 1/8" larger than that, put one corner in the punched corner and see where the others fall. If necessary I can make a little mark and trim it to fit each corner. Hope this is clear.

Great cards, Evie & Mimu! Evie's reminds me of Easter & Spring so much!
Mimu. Yeah, getting the size can be such a pain, but really like the look of your card. The flower reminds me of a Tudor rose or Japanese Cherry blossom.
Nyoka. Pretty sure I shared how to "Vellumize with Vaseline" on an older thread, but here's the quick version:
Smear plain paper with Vaseline. You can do 1 side or both for different effects. You can rub off excess with a paper towel, use a heat gun to melt the vaseline into the paper [or not]. Depending on inks & such, you may need to stamp first--then apply the vaseline. Obviously there are lots of variables--coated paper & such--so be prepared to play. HTH

Evie, great card, I love how it's all so coordinated! I mean, the circles on the BG paper, and the circles you added...it goes so well together! Yeah, I know, DUH! But it DOES!*LOL*
Mimu, your card looks great! I think you're trying to scan a smaller file size, which is giving you thumbnails, instead of full sized scans. Try scanning at high resolution, then run the scan through PixResizer (takes less than a second to resize it*wink*) to shorten the file length. That way, your file size will be small enough to use on any site, yet still be in high resolution and normal sized when viewed.*wink* Now, about that card!*LOL* It's hard to see, but it looks like you did something with that first, green circle. Do I detect some kind of lace, or cut work on the edges of that circle??? If so, please enlighten us on how you did it? It looks COOL!*G*

Mimu, your card is very pretty, too. I think you used that llarge lacy round circle punch for one of the circles and the colors of your card are yummy! Very nice! Stick with the scanning and sizing and before long, you'll be a pro! :)
If anyone is interested in Daniel's "How to make Vellum" thread - go to the Search function and type in Vellum. Look through the threads and you'll find it. I remember it! :D
AND he's right ... I've started cards and got part-way into them and thought, "This isn't working." I've learned to "JUST KEEP GOING AND FINISH." :) I would say 9 out of 10 times the card turns out fine and sometimes greater than I thought! ;) It has to be really bad for me to throw it away now. Yeah, RIGHT!*LOL* I guess I just can't allow anything to be easy, it's not in my nature. So, I took this fun, easy to do Challenge, and turned it into the longest bout of fighting with supplies to just get a card together!*LOL* I guess it's just that I'm embellishment impaired, that has to be it. :D
ANYway, even though I can't reach half my supplies, and those I can reach take me hours to find, I just had to show you MY frustrating attempt to complete this Challenge! Glad you 'finished' & shared this, Char, but I agree with you. Having often found myself overworking, overthinking & doing way too much technique on projects, I can commiserate.
That said, however, there's lots of potential in your piece & many parts of it that I find very attractive & even inspirational. And... While I agree with you, I do not disagree with those who've found your piece lovely. It's a matter of personal p.o.v.

Well, Char, no matter how much fighting you had to do in order to produce that card, it's obvious that you won the battle...and the rest of us get to enjoy the prize! Your card is a joy to look at and a feast for the eyes. Thanks for giving us this beauty.

Char, I think it looks wonderful and I'd never know that card was frustrating for you to make. It looks like it naturally goes together and is very well designed. So, what was the most difficult thing for you to do with it - picking the paper or the stamp for the embellishment circle? Like I said, it looks perfect! I'm very proud of you for sticking with it! It was worth it! :D

Attached is my take on the challenge.
I used a ticket corner punch, patterned paper by Anna Griffin, and the Posh Hydrangea stamp. The buttom circle was embossed using the Cuttlebug Textiles embossing folder.

Love how you embossed just the circle surrounding the flower...I would have never thought of that!

03-18-2008, 07:37 AM
Well, for once the colors weren't a problem. I picked out my colors first! The patterned paper...first time around, I tried using it for the smaller circle, but it was overpowered. Next, I tried using it as the rectangular layer, and it was too busy. So it became the larger circle. Then, I decided there wasn't enough texture, so I ran that patterned piece through a Cuddlebug embossing folder. But with the pattern, you couldn't see the embossing! So, I tried rubbing some Versamark over the top pattern, then applied some gold pigment powder. But you can't see it in the scan.*LOL*
THEN it was trying to decide what to put on that smaller circle. THAT took forever! First, I KNOW I have some of those white flower embellishments that you can color with markers...I thought it would go perfectly in that smaller circle. And it WOULD have, too, if I could have found 'em!*LOL* So then I looked through the embellishments I COULD find, but nothing fit the design, the size needed, or the colors needed. Then it was on to looking through my stickers...again, nothing jumped out at me, and stickers just weren't what I wanted. (We're not at day number 3, BTW*wink*)
So next I started checking through my tiny stamps, looking for something that would fit that smaller circle. And not liking anything I found! Maybe 2 hours into this, I thought I'd check my larger images, maybe just use a part of one or something...and found my Posh flower sets! Picked out the one I did only because Blossom and I had been talking about these images a few months ago.*LOL* But the image itself was just too...well, FLAT! So decided to add a brad. And just happened to have one that matched that first, purple layer almost perfectly, so I attached it to the stamped circle, put my foam tape on the back and stuck it down. Only to realize that the danged brad simply matched TOO well, it disappears into the colored paper!*LOL* And too late to fix it without ruining my papers!
Ok, so now we're up to the sentiment. Originally, I had planned to do the stamping directly onto the mulberry paper. But after assembling it, I realized that the mulberry paper was too sheer to go over that patterned paper, you'd never be able to read the sentiment! So I figured I"d use mulberry as a layer. Stamped my sentiment onto copy paper, did a quick wash with watercolor, then tore it out. It was too big. So I stamped a different sentment, washed over it, tore it out...it was again too big. Four sentiments later, they were ALL too big, even though they were small stamps! Final try was the one you see, which is a peg stamp.
Ok, so now everything is attached...and I realize that OHMAGOSH, that first, purple layer is just too PLAIN!!! I thought it would look good, the plain paper with the patterned circle on top...but there was too MUCH plain paper!!! So I grabbed the dragonfly stamp off the same floral set, stamped it with Versamark and covered it with the same gold pigment power. Yeah, it adds something to that plain, purple layer...but it's not what I SHOULD have done.*wink* It would have looked better, I think, if I had instead stamped the entire purple layer with Versamark, and just gone for the watermark look. That solid purple layer is, IMO, where I lost it with this one. I SHOULD have just set all the pieces in place, to see what it would look like, BEFORE I started gluing. But after putting so many hours into trying to finish it, I just wanted to get it DONE, and got ahead of myself. And this is the result...something that's not what I wanted, that might have a few good points, but is ruined by not thinking it all through before assembly.
Sound frustrating to you???*ROFLMBO*

BEV!!! OHmagosh, when I posted the above, I thought I was on the last page of this thread...but I wasn't, there was another page, with your gorgeous card on it!!! OK what is this ticket corner punch? It just puts those small "nocks" onto the corners??? Or does it cut small slits? Are your corners inserted into slits??? (I think I need this punch!*LOL*) And boy, that embossing folder goes GREAT with that patterned paper!!! Lovely creation, girlfriend.*VBG*

Hi Everyone,
I thought I'd attempt Nykoia's challenge. I've done two samples. The first sample was mostly punches that I used for the flower. to determine the size of my circle i used a tea-light holder for the larger circle, the smaller one I traced the aluminum small tea light candle thingee, traced and cut it out. The one stamp I used comes from an estate sale (red rubber glued on purple thin foam and then wood mounted. It looks old to me. I'd appreciate any info on company stamp if anyone knows so that I can catalogue it. I used a punch from EK success and carefully punched around my circle to give it character. I used the same punch for the corners.
The second sample was done the same way except I wanted to use my one stamp to be the petals in my flower and making it part of it's focus. I'm not certain if this one is aceptable or not for the challenge. I added a piece of scrap paper that i had from another card that I designed. I kept the scrap piece because I liked the scalloped edges and thought I could use it at a later time. I'm glad I had it. I think sample #2 makes for an interesting design even if not accepted as part of the desigh #1 challenge. I have to say I enjpoyed this challenge. Now I have 2 extra cards which will come in handy for this Easter Holiday.
Pardon the mix-up of different programs I am using. I have to get to my scanner through photoshop now and I'm still learning how this stuff all works. I hope I learn it soon as it's driving me crazy. (lol) My kids are in university and never home half the time so I don't have anyone to coach me so I experiment on my own.

Now if you excuse me, I have a challenge to work on. Hugs, Verna

04-17-2008, 07:26 PM
Okay, here is what I did. The background paper is by Sizzix as is the lighter lavender circle which I used the Cuttlebug on. The darker circle was purchased already with the dry embossed design so that was good to work with. I had to trim the smaller lavender circle with a decorative scissors and it was still too big, so I trimmed again. Well, the circle was the right size but then I had those leftover trims from it laying there so I decided to add them to the other side on the corners. The corner punch I used is from All Night Media. The saying is stamped and is from Sweet Celebrations company. To finish the card I added a silk pansy. (When they had the artificial silk flowers marked way down after Memorial Day, I picked up several bouquets for a small fee which I figured could be used on cards one day. I guess that one day has arrived. ;) ) Hopefully, I aced the challenge and didn't forget anything now. Hugs, Verna

And your design is so very artistic too..and you are a great artist as well. Thanks for that compliment but it ain't true girl! You have just as much talent in you as the next person. Hey, we are all super artistic. :)
And, no, SandDollar, I didn't buy the Cuttlebug. I still used my Sizzix to make the Cuttlebug backgrounds. It works, so why spend money on another object and instead will buy supplies to go with it. I can still pump the handle three times or as much as is needed. I am not that whimpy yet. ;) Hugs, Verna

Here is my version - finally! Circles are a challenge for me, so I'm glad you have provided a nudge for me to work with them more. One of my goals for the year is to use circles in my scrappin, too. I did do some ATCs with em a while ago, but boy this format is HARD for me, LOL My favorite embellishment is a square, and you wouldn't believe how many sizes of square punches I have.
Since I had to use a form I'm less comfortable with I decided to use a color palette that I AM comfortable in. Adirondak Caramel, denim and cranberry. I took apart a couple of silk flower stems and sprayed the petals with a mix of reinker and water, then stacked three of them together and stuck them to the CS circle (stamped with the Posh BG stamp) with a brad fastener. Before I put the flowers on it I brushed the circle with Caramel ink with a color duster, edged it with black soot.
Patterned paper I made spritzing it with the three colors, stamped it with one of the splatter looking stamps from the Watercolor flowers set #1, punched it with the corner edger and then stamped it with black acrylic paint using a foam alphabet set, gabby, by Making Memories. I edged the card base with one of the border stamps in the WC#1 set.
I'm editing the post - I kept feeling like the card needed something - and decided it is a horizontal element. If I was starting from scratch, I'd have the ribbon under the JOY, but since it is stamped right on the patterned paper, no can do. Added two pieces of gingham ribbon. Without referring to the first post, I can't remember if that is strictly within the constraints of the challenge.

Here is my attempt ... but I didn't ace the challenge. :o I interpreted it differently by using a portrait card. That part is OK, but when I looked back at the sketch I realized that the greeting/sentiment needed to overlap the circle. Well, mine definitely doesn't! LOL! :) But I'm showing you my card anyway. It would only take a few adjustments to do this to another similar card.
I used patterned paper and ran it through the swirl design Cuttlebug embossing folder. Then I lightly brushed metallic silver ink over the top to bring out the swirls. (You really need a light hand or you'll get too much ink.) Punched the corners and layered on yellow cardstock.
I punched the yellow circle and the silver embossed frame is also a Cuttlebug product. It is a two stepper - die cut, then emboss. The tags are by Cuttlebug too. (I love Cuttlebug products, although I don't have a machine. ;) I use my Big Kick to cut/emboss them. Works great!)
This card is for my niece's BD ... maybe I'll get around to another challenge card that is totally correct! :D
Enjoy!

Well, I think it was aced..the flower is a circle as well and it sort of overlaps the inner ones..you just added a frame to the first one with the Cuttlebug design. Cool way to add the sentiments on tags. I love your interpretation and I love the card too. So will your niece, I am sure! Hugs, Verna

Rocksgirl, I didn't emboss the card. For the trimming I just stamped the rim etc. with a lighter purple.

Thanks ladies! This is such a fun site LOL
I have been going through the older challenges and have made a list. How about some of you going through and re-doing or just trying the challenges? After all this is where we get great ideas!!!!! This is soooo much fun ..... I'd really like to see examples of using stamps for things they were not intended. Any one interested? My idea is in the making!!!!

Wow Daylene! I love your card and I must say that I have never thought of embossing over a printed piece of cardstock and THEN lightly coloring the embossed image! It really makes quite an impression , no pun intended! I will have to try this soon! I also have the embossing card that you used (both of them).Thank you so much for such a pretty and artistic example! Big hug, Julie

And I love the way a lot of you have not taken this as literally as I did...I read "circle" so used only a circle...but a lot of you thought BEYOND the simple words, and came up with shapes that we all know, and that are also circles...ah, now that's creativity.*wink*
